Applications are the core of digitalization strategies of businesses. The Austrian Federal Computing Centre (short: BRZ as abbreviated from its German name Bundesrechenzentrum), which is headquartered in Vienna, takes care of the future prospects of the domestic E-government applications and specifically the related data. The emphasis after all is to guarantee structured processes and to ensure the safety of the data of the Republic of Austria.

The BRZ oversees 30,000 IT jobs in more than 300 locations and operates one of the biggest data centers in the country with more than 4,000 servers. FinanzOnline is one of the most important out of more than 400 (!) E-government applications. More than 4.5 million people file their tax returns online. Besides that, notable products of the BRZ include HELP.gv.at with 1.5 million hits per month and the human resources management SAP installation that conducts more than 400,000 payrolls per month for the Federal Government.

Communication patterns that are deviating can only be identified quickly once all the application dependencies and the data streams are transparent. For his reason, BRZ backs on a solution by NTS, which is able to ensure precisely this transparency: Cisco Tetration. With the help of sensors, the users of Cisco Tetration are able to supervise via this platform the state of the servers and of network devices, especially in a virtualized environment, Thus, data will be generated that can be used for the optimization of the infrastructure. Cisco Tetration provides an integral protection of workloads for multicloud data centers with a zero-trust model by means of segmentation.

“The solution that is used offers a better outline of the communication paths of applications and therefore provides the possibility to conduct network activations in an even more granular way and even more restricted to the essential matters. Thus, an increase in safety is created naturally. In case of a disruption, Cisco Tetration is furthermore also able to contribute in narrowing down faults faster”, states Wolfgang Danzinger, the Department Head of infrastructure/central services at the Austrian Federal Computing Centre BRZ.

ABOUT BRZ

The IT sectors of the Austrian Ministry of Finance were outsourced in 1997 into the Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH. The owner of the BRZ is the Republic of Austria, represented by the Federal Ministry of Finance. As a limited liability company, the BRZ is managed in accordance with the principles of market economics and thus competes with companies in the IT sector. As a full service provider, the BRZ offers solutions and services along the entire IT value chain starting from the development and the implementation of individual and standard software all the way to its secure operation. In 2017, the 1,200 employees of the BRZ accounted for a revenue of 292 million Euros. When developing new products and services, the BRZ counts on the most advanced technologies like predictive analysis, artificial intelligence, chatbots or blockchains and it is also makes use of these innovative methods. For all applications, safety is the underlying premise and the BRZ is certified according to the most recent international standards.

 “It was required to design the positioning of the system accurately due to the complexity of the infrastructure in the data center and the many different customers for whom the systems are operated.
