WEATHER OBSERVATION IS MORE THAN JUST TO STARE INTO THE SKY

As a globally operating business, UBIMET relies on real time communication services and offers its customers – which range from the Austrian railways (ÖBB), via UNIQA insurances and event organizers, up to sport teams like the Australian Olympic sailing team – precise weather data. Thereby to guarantee precision, reliability and up-to-date availability of data, UBIMET has counted for years on the professional network technology of NTS and Cisco.

Mario Kahn, Head of Information Technology at UBIMET explains, “With NTS we have found the perfect partner for supply, service and configuration of our networks as well as the regular maintenance of the hardware of our servers, blade as well as rack servers and network components like switches for instance.”

GLOBAL NETWORKING WITH EACH PROJECT

As UBIMET has locations in New York, Australia, France, Germany and several Eastern European countries besides the headquarters in Vienna, the common optimization of the network architecture and the round-the-clock service by NTS are forming an essential fact. “The design of the individual components must be perfectly coordinated. Only then, the perfect operation of our internal communication can be guaranteed, as it has to work in each country as well as cross-nationally. This is essential as we require a smooth handling of our numerous projects”, says Kahn. Unified Communication services (UC) by Cisco is serviced by NTS as well. Here, UBIMET mainly utilizes the services for video conferencing.

TO CONNECT 19 CITIES ON ALMOST ALL CONTINENTS WITH THE HEADQUARTERS IN VIENNA

TROUBLE-FREE AROUND THE WORLD

This includes amongst others, the weather forecasts for Formula One races: the meteorologists of UBIMET attended every race in the 2014 season in order to locally transmit the accurate weather data to each Formula One team. This means to connect 19 cities on almost each continent with the headquarters in Vienna. “The data, which was sent via radio to our weather station, needed to reach the teams free of interference and trouble-free via the rack server. In order to safeguard this, the server always had to be in perfect working condition.” This was a logistical challenge during which NTS advised the IT experts of UBIMET and furthermore supported the experts during maintenance work. “We know how important it is for such large projects that each hardware component works flawlessly”, says the NTS project team, “As a service partner that is trained on the newest hardware of various suppliers we guarantee exactly that as well as a prompt hardware replacement in case of a technical failure.”
